Who puts the fun in parties, weddings — events? The bartender comes to mind! Whether it’s timeless standards or signature cocktails, it’s the bartender who’s there to make your favorite drink. Robert Ryan Catering & Design‘s bar manager Katy Mead does that and so much more for couples and corporate planners, alike.

What is your job title? What do you do day-to-day?

As the bar manager, I prepare ingredients and recipes for signature cocktails for upcoming events, and make sure that everything is ready for our bartenders on the day of events. I bartend at events each weekend, too! 


How long have you worked for Robert Ryan Catering & Design?

I’ve been with RRC&D since August 2021. 



What did you do before?

Prior to working at RRC&D, I was the Operations manager for a horseback riding lesson and boarding facility. I grew up riding horses, and spent most of my spare time throughout adolescence at the barn. I’ve worked and lived on farms on and off for most of my adult life. I started bartending in graduate school because the hours worked with my class schedule. Bartending is something I’ve come back to more and more frequently over the years, and I’ve found great enjoyment in learning how to hone my craft and build delicious drinks. 


How would you describe Robert Ryan Catering & Design to a potential client or employee?

RRC&D provides comprehensive event packages at our dedicated venues, including in-house kitchen, bar and event coordinator staffing. This multifaceted team ensures that events are well thought out, well planned, properly staffed, and can occur smoothly and enjoyably for our clients and their guests.

Where did you grow up? What did you want to be when you were growing up?

I grew up in Northeast Texas … and, I’m still not sure what I want to be when I grow up.

What do you love most about your job?

My favorite part of this job is creating drink recipes and customizing cocktails that people enjoy. The most popular cocktails I serve include our signature cocktails that are specifically created for events, Bay Breezes and Old-Fashioneds. 

Tell us something about yourself that no one would know just by looking at you.

I have a doctorate in adult education and a master’s in transatlantic literature. I chose a master’s in literature because I love the study of language and the timeless works of literature. I decided to focus on education for my doctoral studies because I believed I could find work as an educational researcher or teach research methodologies once I finished. This wasn’t the case, so I returned to bartending. Then, the pandemic changed things, and I went back to farm work, moving from Texas to Pennsylvania. I worked on a farm in Quakertown last spring and summer, but missed bartending and found RRC&D. I’ve very much enjoyed working behind the bar and getting to create recipes again. 

What do you do for fun outside of work?

I enjoy hiking with my dogs, riding my horse and reading.

What would be your desert island last meal?

Smoked pork belly tacos.
